The release of this lens coincides with Tamron’s 60th anniversary, & they have put great care & attention to detail into its design. The lens is the first from Tamron of this zoom range to feature Vibration Compensation & the first of all their lenses to have its Ultrasonic Silent Drive motor for ultra-fast focusing. Extra Low Dispersion for Fine Image Resolution This lens uses one LD (Low Dispersion) & one XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) element to counteract colour fringing that is caused by the refraction of light in traditional lens elements. The result is extremely low levels of chromatic aberration & contrast & sharpness that are class beating. Multiple BBAR (Broad Band Anti Reflection) coatings have been employed to keep flare & ghosting to negligible levels & the inclusion of a flower shape hood makes sure that stray light is kept from entering the lens. Ultrasonic Silent Drive Focus First introduced in this lens, this technology uses ultrasonic wave interactions to propel the focus mechanism quickly & precisely to its desired point. The end result is ultra-fast focus even at long focal lengths, making this lens ideal for sports & wildlife photography. If you prefer manual focus this is attainable at any time without a switch, just by rotating the focus ring manually – courtesy of the Full Time Manual Focus feature. Filters are easily managed too thanks to fully internal focusing. Vibration Compensation The image stabilisation for this lens works from three coils & offers up to four extra stops of smaller apertures to be used, allowing for much greater scope when shooting fast moving or dimly lit subjects. Also features 1:4 Macro magnification & full frame or APS-C compatibility.   ...

Two years after Tamron launched the SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di lens as a standard, compact, fast standard zoom lenses, it remains highly popular with advanced amateur & professional photographers alike. Now Tamron, moving with market trends, has unveiled a new design for fast standard zoom lenses used exclusively for digital SLR cameras that covers the easy to use angles of view: the focal length is equivalent to 26-78mm* when converted to a 35mm format. In particular, the wide-angle focal length is established at 17mm (26mm equivalent) to obtain a wider angle of view than ordinary standard zoom lenses, while maintaining the remarkably lightweight & compact size of the earlier full frame zoom lens model. * Tamron’s conversion ratio is 1.55 x. MAIN FEATURES Lightweight, Compact Fast Standard Zoom Lens, Designed Exclusively for Digital SLR Cameras, with 17mm Wide Angle Coverage The lens covers virtually the same angle as focal lengths of 26-78mm when converted to a 35mm format. The wide-angle focal length is established at 17mm (26mm equivalent) to obtain a wider angle of view than ordinary standard zoom lenses. Since the lens is designed exclusively for APS-C sized digital cameras, the image circle diameter has been reduced. Optical System Uses Special Glass, & Is Optimized for Digital SLR Characteristics to Enhance Optical Quality in a Compact Design. The use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass optimizes the overall distribution of optical power & also reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum. In addition, two hybrid aspherical elements maintain imaging performance & help compress the entire optical system. Furthermore, an LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis & lateral chromatic aberrations. Minimum Focus Distance
- The new lens achieves a minimum focus distance of 27cm over the entire zoom range, one of the best in its class among fast standard zoom lenses with an F/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range used exclusively for digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized image sensors. The maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5*1 at the 50mm setting is the top level in its class. *1 Since APS-C sized image sensors are smaller than 35mm film, the 17-50mm can fill the frame with almost the same scope as a lens with a Max. Mag. Ratio of 1:3.0 on a 35mm SLR camera. Optical Design Dedicated to Digital SLR Photography This zoom lens uses an optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager within a certain scope over the entire image field by considering the effects of variance due to zooming. Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
- Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery. Outstanding Resolution
- Since the lens is designed exclusively for digital SLR photography, it provides high image quality resolution, contrast & flatness of image field. Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting & Flare
- By employing “ Internal Surface Coatings” (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) & new multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting & flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element & reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum. Large Aperture in Lightweight, Compact Design Thanks to New Mechanical Devices
- Complicated mechanisms are built into the compact body for excellent portability & ease of use. In addition, a complex triple cam structure where cams zoom & focus within a three-layer lens barrel has been further developed to improve AF focus precision for close-in shots & torque irregularity when zooming in & out. in addition, the engineering of the lens has been completely overhauled to downsize its parts & to increase their precision & durability. Zoom Lock Mechanism Incorporated– A Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination. Flower-Shaped Lens Hood
- included as a standard accessory, it provides optimum shading of superfluous light rays that enter from the rectangular frame outside the image field. New External Design of the New Di II Series
- Improvements have been made to the external design by adding a gold-colored band between the focus & zoom rings to enhance the appearance & make the product stand out as a Di-II lens. The rubber patterns of the zoom rings have also been enhanced to provide better handling. SPECIFICATIONS  Focal Length 17-50mm Maximum Aperture F2.8 Angle of View 78°45’-31°11’ (APS-C size equivalent) Lens Construction 16 elements in 13 groups Minimum Focus Distance 0.27m (Over the entire zoom range) Maximum Magnification Ratio 1:4.5 (at f=50mm MFD 0.27m) Filter Diameter  67mm Overall Length 81.7mm Maximum Diameter  74mm Weight 434 grams * Diaphragm Blades 7 Blades (circular apertures) Minimum Aperture F/32 Standard Accessory Flower Shaped Lens Hood

This 17-50mm is an extremely high-quality standard zoom with a high luminosity of 2.8 over the entire focal length range. It belongs to the Super performance (SP) class of Tamron lenses distinguished by ultra high optical & mechanical quality. The high luminosity that this lens offers is ideal for low-light conditions & professional image composition. The result is images with smooth, even bokeh (background blur), where the subject is virtually released from the background. Apart from the unlimited possibilities that this lens has to offer, it is the quality of your images that stand in the focus. The world´s shortest minimum focus distance of only 27 cm was achieved, by using 3 XR glass elements (Extra Refractive) in the front group coupled with a new mechanical design, whilst at the same time keeping the construction compact. The maximum magnification ratio of 1:4, 5 & a weight of mere 430 g are also a worldwide top*. Image defects are kept at an absolute minimum through the application of aspherical elements & LD (Low dispersion) glass as well as a special coating of internal glass surfaces (Internal Surface Coating). The result is high-quality extremely sharp & excellent images. *based on lenses of the same class & F/2, 8 Please note that Di II lenses are made for the exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with image sensors smaller than 24mm x 16mm. Di II lenses cannot be used together with a full format or 35mm SLR camera, as their image sensors are not able to cover the entire area of full format resulting in dark corners of the (i.e. vignetting becomes noticeable). Please note: The 17-50mm became available with a built-in motor for the Nikon D40, D40X & D60 (Model A16NII) from March 2008. The A16N model which had been available up until March 2008 is only compatible with the D40/D40X/D60 in the MF mode due to the fact it doesn´t have a built-in motor. ...
