An inhabitant of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, this deep-water dwelling creature is often referred to as a living fossil, on account of its connection with its ancient forefather, the fossil collectors' favourite, the Ammonite. The Nautilus (or sailor, from the Greek) fills & empties the chambers of its shell to adjust its buoyancy as it moves across the slopes of coral reefs that it calls home. By winding the mechanism of this robust brass & wood device the user is able to slide the hemishells to & fro; allowing viewers to delight in the fascinating cephalopod's logarithmic spiral as it separates & becomes whole once again.
