Iolite earrings long violet gemstone earrings Silver earrings set with iolite gemstones on leather thongs Iolite is one of my favourite gemstones. It was used by the Vikings as a navigational tool, as it polarises light. In fact, this polarisation gives iolite one of its special properties, pleochroism which means that it can look different colours under different lights, i..e shades of violet & blue. I made sure to drill the setting for the gemstone so that light can shine through it when you wear the silver earrings. Made by hand forging sterling silver & hammering a cross pattern into the earring to give it that modernist look. The iolite gemstone (3mm oval cut) was set into the sterling silver peg which was then hung from Greek leather (suede). The leather is finished with a sterling silver cap hooked onto a sterling silver ear wire. A very funky modernist pair of iolite earrings. Length of drop approx. 3.5 inches. ...
