It's sometimes called the ground cherry, which is misleading
- because it doesn't grow on the ground & it isn't a cherry. Never mind, physalis is a wonderfully decorative shrub, as you can see from the photograph. Note the attractive husks on the fruit that give rise to this variety (P. alkekengi) being called ' Chinese lanterns or ' Japanese lanterns'. Look closely, & you'll also see clusters of delightful little bell-shaped flowers. These add a charming sense of lightness & fun to an arrangement that creates a real impact, & captures the rich, mellow fruitfulness of autumn.
