The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints
- which make deft use of mixed-media techniques, collage styles, & material innovation
- are distinguished by their bold use of colour & compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi. For ‘ Untitled Audrey Hepburn Erased’ Smythe has taken a famous photograph of Audrey Hepburn, perched upon a stool in black & white, & washed it with strokes of neon pink paint, until the actress is almost obscured behind a thick layer of pigment. Merging vintage photography with contemporary technique, Smythe creates a raw, dynamic quality, deeply reminiscent of the innovative styles of 1950s experimental art.
