David Studwell is a contemporary artist whose work explores the traditional print-making processes & cultures of the twentieth century. Taking photographic images of some of the century’s greatest icons & celebrities
- from Al Capone to Marilyn Monroe
- Studwell revitalises them with washes of retro colour, for a distinctly Pop-Art feel. ‘ Steve Mc Queen I’ depicts an image of the ‘ King of Cool’
- but not as you’ve ever seen him before. A grinning Mc Queen stands for a Police Department mug shot, which Studwell has washed with tones of grainy, 1950s blood-orange. Studwell’s eye is exquisitely tuned to the timelessly iconic, while his sensitivity to colour & tonality adds the finishing touch for the perfect pop screen print.
