The ripeness of the Merlot and the precision of the Cabernet were key for the 2012 vintage. The two varieties were very different in style and a big concern for the Château was the blend, however we were told ‘the blend came easily in 4-5 tastings’ - settling on 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Cassis, blackcurrant leaf, hints of pine and cedar wood. Wonderful integration of dark fruits, silky tannins and refreshing acidity lead to a huge grand finale of a finish. A completely stunning wine.

From the gravelly dunes of Leoville-Barton's vineyards, leading down to the bank of the Gironde, La Reserve is the second wine of this famous property. As an earlier drinking version of the grand vin, this is real value for money. With a classic 'left bank' nose of smoky blackberry fruit and pencil lead, the palate is rich and rounded with assertive tannins, ample fruit and well integrated oak. Serve with shoulder of lamb braised in wine. Drinking well at the moment, but will keep for another 5 or so years.
When the neighbours’ wines go for £50+ a bottle you know you’re onto a good thing. Caronne St-Gemme is only 500 yards from St Julien, next door to Château Gruaud-Larose and Château Lascombes – and itself produces classed-growth quality fruit. That makes it not just one of the most reliable Cru Bourgeois – it’s also one of the best value. It’s classic Haut-Medoc, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon which means it has a firm structure and lots of tannin – so it’s great with protein, and can age fantastically. It’s packed with really rich, dark fruit flavours. Plum. Blackberry. Classic Cabernet cassis. Delicious with roast red meat.
We’ve sold this wine for thirty years – and for that whole time it’s been a bestseller. Why’s it so popular? White Burgundy is a go-to for Chardonnay drinkers, and the Mâconnais in particular offers great value. Unlike the northern Côtes, the southern part of Burgundy doesn’t have a formalised vineyard hierarchy system. So the wines tend to be a bit more wallet-friendly. Not to mention, Lugny is one of the best regarded villages in the Mâcon, and Latour one of the most famous houses. Honeyed. Peachy. Crisp. A dream with salty finger foods or a classic Sunday roast chicken. It’s proof that sometimes it pays to stick with the old favourites.
William Fèvre are amongst the leading producers in Chablis and set the benchmark for village-level Chablis with this effort. With a family history of over 250 years in the region, their expertise is unquestionable in this marginal, northern region. With a searing backbone of acidity and bone-dry finish balanced by fresh lime, lemon and orange fruits, this wine also displays nuances or flint and chalk on the nose. This benchmark Chablis would provide the perfect accompaniment salmon for a real treat, or simply as a drinks party white.
A family run domaine who predominantly grow Sauvignon Blanc in and around the area of Chaudoux-Verdigny in Sancerre. The use of old vines points to a better quality of wine as the vine shows reduced vigour and therefore smaller more concentrated yields. This wine exhibits classic passionfruit and mineral characters coupled with a racy acidity giving excellent balance and structure. Drink now and enjoy well chilled with gazpacho or fresh crab.
