This very bright CREE Q5 LED torch utilises the very popular and well documented low profile Cree XP-E emitter, with a Q5 output bin, coupled with the PMMA lens produces a very efficient and superb light giving a maximum of 180 lumens. **Do not be duped by FALSE Lumen figures given on a lot of other CREE LED torches sold on seller platforms and auction sites. It is not possible to achieve 900 Lumens at this price point! Anyone can print spurious numbers to make a torch sound like it will be bright **
So bright, could it be classified as a weapon? Not that we are condoning pointing it in the direction of someone’s face or looking directly into it. Just saying that IF required it will definitely render someone momentarily blind should you find yourself in a late night sticky situation!
At first glance the torch appears extremely high quality, once in the hand this feeling is further backed up. The incredibly strong outer casing is constructed from Aerospace-grade 6061T Aluminium Alloy and at 29mm diameter is a good comfortable width. At the tech end of the torch, the heavyweight lens protection bezel measures 35mm in diameter. It is here that the anodised green, ‘magnetic click’ zoom focusing ring is located. It is excellently designed and I feel a better and faster way of zooming than the ‘push/pull ‘ style.
The four section rectangular cut outs running down the length of the body provide ample grip and are a refreshing aesthetic change from the typical heavy knurling or hatching style associated with a lot of torches.
The 3 x ‘AAA’ Cell batteries batteries are simply loaded into the cartridge through the shaft and once loaded the whole lot weighs in at just 160g. The end cap has a thick rubber O ring creating a water tight seal (I ran it under the tap with no problems at all) and also comprises a high quality strong spring giving a solid connection.
The body is finished off with a simple raised push on/off rubberised button; this button offers 3 ‘click’modes.
1 click for Full Power mode
2 clicks for Low Power mode
3 clicks for Strobe function
Torch Measures 14.7cm long, the head diameter is 3.5cm diameter and the body is 2.8cm diameter. Weight 160 Grams with batteries fitted.
The lens is constructed from PMMA which is a clear plastic acrylic material which is often used as a replacement for glass. It is also used in a lot of high quality lens based products owed to its very clear and bright nature - PMMA is commonly used in places where shatter-proof glass or windows are required, such as the puck barriers found in ice-hockey rinks and you have seen what a clattering they take! Essentially that makes this lens very bright and incredibly hard wearing.
To summarise, this torch is ideal for 'every day' use as well as many outdoor pursuits given its size, water resistance and durability. Anyone into camping, fishing etc will be more than impressed. At this price point it’s probably worth keeping one stashed in the car glove compartment or in a Photo Kit Bag (you never know).
