Many Hong Kong cinema fans were introduced to veteran actor Di Lung through his role opposite Chow Yun Fat in John Woos seminal 1984 crime drama, A Better Tomorrow. But longtime fans know that his career stretches even further back to the late 60s. In 1968, Di Lung caught attention of soon-to-be legendary director Chang Cheh who cast him alongside star Jimmy Wang Yu in Return of the One Armed Swordsman.
Di Lungs winning good looks & natural athleticism soon brought him fame as a martial arts movie star at Shaw Brothers studio. In the succeeding years, he made a variety of memorable films for the venerable production company, including such martial arts classics as The Water Margin, The Blood Brothers, & Duel of the Fists. Having earned a reputation as a major box office draw, Di Lung sought to change his image & spread his wings as an actor, taking on more modern, socially relevant roles. Thanks to his early success, his standing within the movie community was high enough that Shaw Brothers studio allowed him to make his feature length directorial debut with Young Lovers on Flying Wheels!
Released in 1974, the film features Di Lung in a starring role, as he trades in the wuxia-style action that typified his early films in favor of a modern day action/romance flick! Forced to choose between the woman he loves & the dangerous, fast-paced life of motorcycles, what will our hero do? Will he toss the bike aside & pick the girl? Or will he leave the girl in favor of the bike? Or is there a chance for some sort of compromise? Featuring appearances by Helen Ko, Ching Ke Wai (from Roving Swordsman), Ge Di Hua (from Sex for Sale), & Jiang Nan, Young Lovers on Flying Wheels is a landmark film in the career of actor/director Di Lung!
