WWII came to an end in August 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied powers. With the defeat of Imperial Japan came the end of fifty years of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, & several hundred thousand Japanese living in Taiwan were repatriated to Japan. Of these, many were "e;wansei, "e; Japanese born in Taiwan during the occupation period who were painfully separated from the only home they had ever known & confronted with hardships & discrimination in Japan.
Writer/producer Tanaka Mika (Chen Xuan Ru) began researching the wansei in 2003. Working with a Taiwan film crew including director Huang Ming Cheng, she found & interviewed hundreds of surviving wansei to hear their heartfelt life stories from repatriated Japanese who forever felt like foreigners in their own country to those who stayed behind in Taiwan, separated from their families. After twelve years of field research & five years of production, the little known stories of the wansei are finally told in the acclaimed documentary Wansei Back Home.
