Bringing a classic story to television screens once more, 2006 TBS drama Sailor Suit & Machine Gun is a resoundingly entertaining mixture of adolescent tropes, kinetic action, & gang satire. Based on an Akagawa Jiro novel, this innovative story about a schoolgirl-cum-gangster was previously adapted into a 1982 Fuji TV drama &, of course, the classic 1981 film starring top 80s idol Yakushimaru Hiroko. Taking on the dramas gun-wielding leading role this time around is starlet Nagasawa Masami. Nagasawa has been a name on the rise in the last few years, with starring roles in dramas like Dragon Zakura & Yasashii Jikan & popular youth films like Touch & Nada Sou Sou, & her performance here helps seal her status as one of the most promising & most popular young actresses in Japan.
High school student Hoshi Izumi (Nagasawa Masami) is just a normal teenaged schoolgirl, but in the blink of an eye, all that she knows about life is changed. Her father dies suddenly in an accident. Soon after, gangster Sakuma (Tsutsumi Shinichi) shows up at her doorstep, claiming that she is the heir to their gang, as she is the last distant relative of their boss who just passed away. Izumi naturally refuses, but is eventually won over by the persistence of the tattered gang, reduced to only five members. & with that, Izumi becomes the eighth-generation leader of the Medaka Gumi gang.
