Following Kumakiri Kazuyoshis Sketches of Kaitan City & Oh Mipos The Light Shines Only There, Yamashita Nobuhiro ( La La La At Rock Bottom) adapts another Akutagawa Prize-nominated story by Sato Yasushi into a compelling portrait of the weary, entrapped lives of those on the socioeconomic margins in the northern seaside city of Hakodate. Starring Odagiri Joe, Aoi Yu & Matsuda Shota, Over the Fence is based on Satos own experiences at a vocational school during the low point of his writing career.
After separating from his wife, Shiraiwa (Odagiri Joe) returns to his hometown & enrolls in a vocational training program. There he meets various other men whose lives arent going anywhere. Every day is just a listless cycle for Shiraiwa until friend Daijima (Matsuda Shota) brings him to a hostess bar where he meets Satoshi (Aoi Yu), a peculiar, captivating young woman who likes to imitate birds. The two fall for each other, but they cant move forward if they dont confront their past traumas & present turmoil.
