Japans longest running film series, Otoko wa Tsurai yo started out as a television drama in 1968 before jumping to the big screen in 1969 with Yamada Yoji at the helm & Atsumi Kiyoshi in the iconic role of traveling salesman Tora-san. For the next 26 years, Tora-san would like timework grace Japans big screens up to four times a year, continuing his unfortunate romantic adventures around the country. Everywhere he goes, kind-hearted Tora-san invariably falls in love with a local damsel played by a top actress, but he always ends up with a broken heart in the end.
