Shall We Dance? director Suo Masayuki shows you what it takes to become a maiko in Lady Maiko, a fun big-screen musical that follows the tradition of the filmmakers lovable underdog comedies Fancy Dance & Sumo Do Sumo Dont. Inspired by My Fair Lady, the film stars talented newcomer Kamishiraishi Mone (chosen from 800 applicants) as a country girl who goes to Kyoto to become a maiko an apprentice geiko like her late mother. Intrigued by the girls odd rural accent (she was born in the south, then lived in the north), a linguistics professor (Hasegawa Hiroki) bets his friend that he can teach her to speak in proper Kyoto accent within six months. Featuring music written by Suos regular composer Suo Yoshikazu, Lady Maiko is filled with colorful Broadway-style musical sequences that truly bring the east & west together in one dazzling package.
