Before the salaryman learned ballroom dancing in Shall We Dance? & the college student joined his schools sumo team in Sumo Do, Sumo Dont, writer-director Suo Masayuki made his non-pink film debut with 1989s Fancy Dance. Motoki Masahiro (who also starred in Sumo Do) stars in this hilarious story about a rocker who learns to become a Zen monk & changes his life in the process. Based on the hit comic by Okano Reiko, the film also co-stars Suzuki Manami ( Tokyo Love Story) & Takenaka Naoto, who would go to become a Suo regular.
Yohei (Motoki Masahiro) is a punk rocker whose father owns a Buddhist temple in the mountains. When he is forced to inherit the temple, Yohei has to enter the temple & train to be a monk for a year. Despite Yoheis initial rebellious resistance to the training regime, he learns to find a balance between the two contrasting worlds with his fellow monks-in-training. However, his girlfriend (Suzuki Manami) shows up at the temple one day, luring Yohei back into his old world.
