Born during the Qing era, Kang Youwei (1858-1927) was a notable thinker & reformer of late 19th/early 20th century China. A strong proponent of constitutional monarchy, the Confucian-educated scholar advocated radical social & political reforms that turned him into a target of the Empress Dowager Cixi. His tome Datong Shu, or The Book of The Great Way, proffers a utopian vision of a world governed by one democratic central government.
Indie filmmaker Evans Chan ( The Map of Sex & Love) sheds light into the life & philosophy of this fascinating historical figure in the docudrama Datong: The Great Society featuring Liu Kai Chi as Kang & Lindzay Chan as his daughter. The film combines theatrical scenarios with documentary techniques to create a unique account of Kangs life, with especial emphasis on his time spent in exile in Sweden.
This edition comes with special features, a soundtrack CD & a booklet.
