Directed by Peng Jia Ru & Lai Li Jun, Taiwan documentary The Immortals Play shares the unique life story of Ruan An Ni, a traditional Taiwanese opera performer from Vietnam. From a young age, An Nis dream was to become a Vietnamese opera star. Instead, she became the star of a circus troupe. Because of a performance in Taiwan, she met & married the leader of a Taiwanese opera troupe & reignited her childhood dream. An Ni spent two years learning the Taiwanese language & traditional opera, & eventually became the leading actress of the troupe. But in this day & age when traditional Taiwanese opera has become a relic of the past, An Ni & her troupe can only drift from temple to temple & perform their best to sparse audiences.
