1981s The Crazy Chase stands at a major crossroads of Hong Kong Cinema. Starring Lau Kar Wing ( Legendary Weapons of China) & featuring a host of other familiar faces from the 70s martial arts movie craze, the films emphasis on comedy of error looks forward to the great kung fu laughfests of the 80s
- which were often more comedy than kung fu. This should come as no surprise when one considers The Crazy Chase is an early directorial effort from Eric Tsang, who paid his dues as a bit player in serious martial arts films before becoming one of Hong Kongs most recognizable comedic character actors. All this plus a script by up-&-coming industry giant Wong Jing ( Royal Tramp) makes The Crazy Chase truly ahead of the curve in Hong Kong comedy.
Lau stars as Shih, a private eye whos fallen on hard times. Taking a job as a bit player in the movies to make ends meet, Shih impresses the studio head after foiling the attempted theft of a priceless antique during a dinner party. The hapless detective is hired to track down the mastermind behind the botched robbery
- who turns out to be none other than the bosss wife, Anna. Shih is completely unaware the culprit is right under his nose, & after being mistaken for Annas lover, he finds himself targeted for assassination by both the scheming wife and her jealous husband! Meanwhile, the bosss insurance company sends in their own undercover investigator, who infiltrates the studio posing as an out-of-work actress. The stage is soon set for a budding romance between the two detective-dramatists
- if they can survive!
