Up-&-coming Hong Kong director Scud made a splash in 2008 with his debut feature City Without Baseball, a urban drama thats nominally about the Hong Kong Baseball Team but is more remembered for its gay undertones & full-frontal nudity scenes. Attaining a quick following & some notoriety for his open depiction of sexuality & the male body, Scud doesnt disappoint with his 2009 follow-up Permanent Residence, a heartwrenching gay love story that doesnt spare on the naked men or the postmodern brooding.
Whats worse, a gay man who doesnt love you, or a straight man who loves you? Partly inspired by Scuds own life story, Permanent Residence follows Ivan (newcomer Sean Li) & his impossible love with the straight Windson (Osman Hung of EO2). Hitting it off after their first meeting in a sauna, Ivan & Windson develop an ambiguous, intimate relationship that follows them through years of ups & downs, fallouts & reunions. The two share a bond deeper than any other, but Windson cannot take the final step & reciprocate Ivans physical love.
The first chapter in Scuds gay film trilogy, Permanent Residence situates its core story of pained love amid existential rumination & an almost amusing fascination with mortality, making the film as artistically intriguing as it is emotionally wrenching. Tech credits are top notch with Herman Yau as cinematographer & Teddy Robin on music. The film features location shooting in China, Thail&, Australia, & most notably Israel & the Dead Sea, which provide a crucial setting for the films unexpected conclusion.
This edition comes with the 138-minute Directors Cut of the film & 61 minutes of bonus features, including making-of, Scud & Byron Pang photo album footage, & the trailer for Scuds upcoming Love Actually... Sucks!.
