Taiwanese actress Shu Qi leads the cast of the highly anticipated action comedy My Wife is a Gangster 3. Released in 2001, the first My Wife is a Gangster, starring Shin Eun Kyung as a tough female gang leader, was a big hit in Korea, selling over five million tickets. Shin reprised her role for the sequel, My Wife is a Gangster 2, but the film failed to take off at the box office despite a high-profile cameo appearance by Zhang Ziyi. The series was originally meant to continue with Shin & Zhang facing off in a third film, but both actresses eventually opted out, paving the way for a franchise facelift & a much needed narrative kick.
My Wife is a Gangster 3 now features a completely new story with a completely new cast. Shu Qi steps into the lead role opposite the always interesting Lee Bum Soo ( The City of Violence) & a solid supporting cast, including Oh Ji Ho ( Super Rookie), Shaw Brothers actor Ti Lung, Hong Kong action film regular Ken Lo, & actress Hyun Young ( The Legend of Seven Cutter) who provides much of the films laughs. Director Cho Jin Kyo, who also helmed the first installment of the series, approaches the story & his international cast with a refreshing new formula this time around, modeling My Wife is a Gangster 3 into a Roman Holiday action comedy.
Chinese-Korean Lim Aryong (Shu Qi) gets sent to South Korea to lay low by her triad leader father (Ti Lung) who is engaged in a bloody power struggle in Hong Kong. In Korea, Aryong meets kindhearted gangster Ki Chul (Lee Bum Soo) who, unaware of her identity, tries to protect her from the legions of thugs hunting her down. Little does he realize, Aryong is more than capable of defending herself.
