Over ten years since the award-winning Taipei 21, Alex Yang returns to the directors chair with the feature film Love in Vain, which screened at the 2015 Taipei Film Festival. As he did in Taipei 21, Yang, who was a screenwriter on Edward Yangs A Brighter Summer Day, reflects on the struggles of young people hindered by sky-high real estate prices in a materialistic society, though Love in Vain takes on a lighter tone.
Newcomer Yen Tsao ( Open! Open!) pulls double duty playing two different characters na ve country boy Yan who is just trying to make a living in the big city & manipulative, street-smart model agency manager Yu. In order to save money to buy a home, Yan makes an investment with a real estate boss, only to fall into a financial trap. Meanwhile, Yu sells out his artist & business partner for personal gain, but just as success seems to be in sight, he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Yan & Yu have nothing to do with each other, but because of their similar appearances, a series of coincidental incidents cause their lives to cross over in unexpected ways.
