Ryoo Seung Wan, the director of Veteran & The Berlin File, revisits the real-life tragedy of Korean slaves on The Battleship Island during World War II. Two years after Veteran, Hwang Jung Min reunites with Ryoo Seung Wan for the action period blockbuster in which he stars as a bandmaster who risks his life to protect his young daughter. Chosen as one of the Top 10 Films at the 37th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, the war epic also marks the silver screen comebacks of So Ji Sub (A Company Man) & Song Joong Ki (A Werewolf Boy), who respectively play a gangster & an independence activist held captive on the isl&. During the Japanese colonial period, bandleader Lee Kang Ok (Hwang Jung Min) attempts to leave Korea with his daughter (Kim Soo Ahn). However, they find themselves on the notorious Hashima Isl&, where over 400 Koreans are enslaved to work in a dangerous coal mine. On the hellish isl&, he meets trouble-making thug Choi Chil Sung (So Ji Sub), tough comfort woman Oh Mal Nyeon (Lee Jung Hyun) & freedom fighter Park Moo Young (Song Joong Ki), who infiltrates the island to rescue a fellow independence activist. The Japanese army plans to destroy the island to cover up their deeds, but Moo Young plots a massive breakout that turns into a terrible massacre.
