SPL (2005)
Hong Kong martial arts superstars Donnie Yen & Sammo Hung star in this explosive crime thriller from director Wilson Yip. Slick, stylish & uncompromising, SPL is without doubt one of the best Hong Kong movies of the new millennium, harking back to the glory days of the 1980s with its themes of loyalty, honor & duty, as well as its flashy action sequences & staggering fight choreography.
Inspector Chan (Simon Yam) has a grudge to bear & a personal vendetta against local mob boss Wong Po (Sammo Hung). Seemingly untouchable & surrounded by an army of faceless young hoodlums, Wong Po holds the city in a vice-like grip. It is 1997 & in anticipation of Hong Kongs imminent handover back to Mainland China, Inspector Ma (Donnie Yen) is sent in to take over Chans unit. Chan has just three days to bring Ma up to speed before he retires, not just letting him in on Wong Po & his dealings, but also making sure Ma understands the Hong Kong way of doing things. The virtuous, crusading Ma, however, is determined to play by the book, but equally committed to bringing Wong Po & his empire crashing to the ground.
SPL 2: A Time For Consequences (2015)
A decade after the thrilling original, SPL gets a spiritual sequel in the adrenaline-fueled SPL 2: A Time For Consequences! Featuring a brand new storyline, the box office hit stars Tony Jaa ( Ong Bak), Zhang Jin ( Rise of the Legend), Louis Koo ( Overheard), & the original films Wu Jing & Simon Yam in new roles.
Hoping to get to Hung (Louis Koo), the kingpin of a crime syndicate, Hong Kong police detective Kit (Wu Jing) goes undercover & infiltrates the organization. Unfortunately, Kits cover is soon blown, & he disappears without a trace, only to turn up in a Thai prison. There, he meets prison guard Chatchai (Tony Jaa) & discovers that he is a bone marrow match for Chatchais leukemia-afflicted daughter. The two men develop a symbiotic relationship, with Chatchai vowing to protect Kit. This proves to be easier said than done; not only is the chief warden (Zhang Jin) determined to kill Kit, an ailing Hung also inexplicably turns up at the prison for a heart transplant, hinting at a large conspiracy.
Paradox (2017)
Wilson Yip reteams with action director Sammo Hung for the blistering crime thriller Paradox, the third film of the SPL series. Louis Koo delivers an intense performance as a hard-boiled cop searching for his abducted daughter in Thail&. Packed with brutal action scenes, the hard-hitting thriller co-stars martial artist Wu Yue ( The Brink), Gordon Lam, Wolf Warriors Chris Collins & Tony Jaa in a special appearance.
Hong Kong cop Lee (Louis Koo) heads to Thailand after his teenage daughter (Hanna Chan) suddenly goes missing during her trip. I
