Japanese master filmmaker Kurosawa Kiyoshi returns to feature filmmaking for the first time in five years with Real, an unsettling head trip into the disturbing world of the subconscious. Sato Takeru ( Rurouni Kenshin) stars as a young man who goes into the mind of his comatose girlfriend (Ayase Haruka) in an effort to revive her. Based on the novel by Inui Rokuro, Real is a mind-bending fantasy psychodrama about trauma, memories, & the roots that shape us into who we are. A competition film at the Locarno Film Festival, Real also co-stars Nakatani Miki ( Memories of Matsuko), Odagiri Joe ( The Great Passage), Koizumi Kyoko ( Penance) & Sometani Shota ( Himizu).
After a suicide attempt, manga writer Atsumi (Ayase Haruka) has been lying in a coma. In his effort to revive her, her boyfriend Koichi (Sato Takeru) decides to try an experimental technology called sensing that would take him into her mind. Through their dreamscape meetings, Koichi realizes the reason for Atsumis coma goes all the way to their childhood days. However, the investigation is threatened when elements from Atsumis popular serial killer manga begin seeping into Atsumis dream world.
