Akira director Otomo Katsuhiro presents his first live-action film in 15 years. Based on Urushibara Yukis award-winning manga, Mushishi, a.k.a. Bugmaster, is a mellow, atmospheric, & enchanting period fantasy that smartly avoids the excesses of the genre. Set in a world of mystic forests, wandering ascetics, & magical creatures, the film still manages to be subtle & organic, thanks to the beautiful natural scenery & selective use of CGI. Otomo approaches Mushishi with minimalist direction & metaphysical moodiness, giving this manga adaptation unexpected weight. Odagiri Joe ( Yureru) is perfectly cast in the leading role, embodying his mysterious character with subdued charisma & inner life, along with the equally impressive Aoi Yu ( Hula Girls) & Esumi Makiko ( Inochi).
Mushishi revolves around silver-haired bugmaster Ginko (Odagiri Joe), who roams the country curing people of mushi, mystical creatures that cause sickness in human beings. Mushi, or bugs, come in many species & do not have any set form; nor are they evil, as their supernatural powers stem from nature, & the resultant ills are more the symptoms of imbalance between mushi & humans. Nevertheless, mushi can cause great harm to people, & Ginko is both gifted & cursed with the ability to find them. His travels bring him to a village of deafs, a little girl with horns, & longtime friend Tanyu (Aoi Yu), whose mushi is too strong to rid. As Ginko struggles to cure Tanyu, the mushi that lies deep within him is awakened.
