Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan refreshes box office records once again with the blockbuster biographical sports drama Dangal, which became the biggest Indian film of all time with a worldwide gross of US$330 million. Based on the true story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat & his daughters Geeta Phogat & Babita Kumari, the film recounts the inspiring journey of two young women who made history as Indias first world-class female wrestlers. As the strict father who pushes his daughters to break gender barriers & strive for greatness, Aamir Khan went through a dramatic body transformation in order to portray his characters change over time from a young muscly wrestler to a pot-bellied middle-aged man. Fatima Sana Shaikh & child actress Zaira Wasim play Geeta Phogat, the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) lives & breathes wrestling, but he had to give up his dreams of winning an international gold medal. What Mahavir was unable to do, he hopes his son will one day achieve. However, he ends up with four daughters & no son. Mahavir resolves himself to disappointment until the day he realizes that his daughters Geeta & Babita are born wrestlers, & they too can bring pride & glory to India. Disregarding the girls initial objections & the disapproval of the village, Mahavir begins training his daughters in Spartan manner. Mahavir & the girls are peppered with taunts & criticism by those who see wrestling as a mans world, but Geeta proves the detractors wrong when she begins wrestling against & beating boys. Then she takes the competition circuit by storm.
