Au Revoir Taipei marks the feature film debut of American-born writer-director Arvin Chen, whose thesis film in film school earned him an award at the Berlin Film Festival. An eccentric mix of romance & chase film that showcases Taipeis charming nightlife, Au Revoir Taipei takes a large cast of characters & puts them on a crazy adventure that happens over the course of one night. But beneath the manic chase lies a sweet love story between emerging Taiwanese pop star Amber Kuo & Jack Yao, making its Valentines Day world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival all the more appropriate. The Wim Wenders-produced film earned critical acclaim worldwide (including the Best Asian Film prize at Berlin), & its opening weekend gross in Taiwan even eclipsed the opening weekends of Cape No. 7 & Hear Me.
Kai (Jack Yao) sits in a bookstore every night studying French books in hopes of visiting his girlfriend in Paris. Instead, he catches the attention of shop worker Susie (Amber Kuo). One night, gangster Brother Bao (Frankie Gao), a frequent customer of Kais family-run noodle shop, offers Kai the money to go to Paris under the condition that Kai transports some "e;cargo"e; for him. The night before he leaves, Kai runs into Susie at the night market just as the police
- led by Yong (Joseph Chang, Prince of Tears)
- & various shady characters all go after Kai for his mysterious cargo. This sends Kai & Susie off on an exciting adventure through the streets of Taipei in a night theyll never forget.
