Rioja is probably Spain's most famous region for quality red wines. Red Rioja is classified into four categories:1. Rioja normally spends several months in barrels 2. Rioja Crianza is aged for a minimum of two years of which one year is spent in oak barrels 3. Rioja Reserva is aged for a minimum of three years of which one year is spent in oak barrels 4. Rioja Gran Reserva is the flagship of Rioja wines with a minimum ageing period of five years, of which two years is spent in oak barrels & three years in bottle. This Imperial Serna from the legendary 2001 vintage is a magnificent 10 year old Rioja Gran Reserva! Garnet red colour. Complex nose with some developed notes such as leather, chocolate, dried figs & prunes. Powerful & warm on the palate with hints of chocolate, toast & dried fruits. The tannins are fine & soft, perfectly balanced with the intense flavours. This is a classic Rioja made with 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha & 10% Mazuelo grapes.
