The story behind the Chesterfield Collection Although the word 'chesterfield' originally referred to a sofa of any kind, the Chesterfield design dates back centuries. Some believe the name derives from the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, a man who was considered at the time to be something of a fashion expert. In the 1700s he is thought to have commissioned a special piece of furniture.
