The Compressor Hooded Jacket is very similar to the M.E. Arete Jacket. They are both considered as a heavyweight mid layer piece or a super lightweight belay jacket and both are constructed using the same Helium 30 outer fabric; however the Compressor is filled with PrimaLoft Gold instead of duck down. This means that this jacket is more suitable for use if you know the day is going to be wet (which in the UK are most days); the reason for this is because PrimaLoft Gold still works when wet where as a down would just die. The Helium 30 fabric itself is highly windproof protecting the nice warm air that is trapped within the PrimaLoft insulation. The adjustable Mountain Hood gives a precise cranial fit and like any decent belay jacket; it packs into its own pocket and can be attached to your harness using the stitched in crab loop. Helium 30 outer is exceptionally lightweight and windproof PrimaLoft GOLD insulation [60g with 40g arms and side panels] Quilted body construction Adjustable Mountain Hood 2-way YKK moulded centre front zip 2 zipped hand warmer pockets Napoleon chest pocket For all you kit geeks out there, the links below will take you to Mountain Equipments Information pages where they will explain this jackets different fabrics, fills and constructions techniques in greater detail. The Arcteryx Kappa Hoody is a brilliant winter insulated hooded jacket. Whilst not guaranteed completely waterproof it will keep out all but the most extreme weather. Heavily insulated with a 140g synthetic Coreloft polyester fibre the Kappa is perfect for active pursuits in freezing conditions. The Kappa is constructed using N70p Windstopper fabric with critical areas reinforced with N80p-X fabric for increased abrasion resistance. Windstopper fabric is made using the same PTFE membrane as normal Gore-Tex products but without some of the protective layers and no taping on the seams, this makes it very highly water resistant but not absolutely completely waterproof. Arcteryx further enhance the wet weather performance of the Kappa by taping the critical seams over the shoulders and chest. Our practical experience has shown us that you would have to try very hard indeed, in some pretty horrendous conditions, to get wet in this jacket. The advantage of Windstopper over Gore-Tex is that it is much more breathable, so better suited to more aerobic activities. Insulation is taken care of by 140g of Coreloft, a siliconised, highly crimped polyester yarn that is highly breathable, compressible and has excellent loft retention. Unlike down Coreloft will retain much of its warmth even if it does get wet. The Kappa is a brilliant jacket made superbly and suitable for all outdoor activities or as a reliable and warm winter jacket. The Lowe Alpine Dryflow 120 Pants have a moisture wicking elasticated waist band and are comfortable to wear under your normal trekking pants, the 120 refers to the fabric weight of 120 grams per square metre. Highly effective moisture management works when you are active and sweating to spread the moisture over the large surface area to evaporate rapidly, and then when you stop the fabric dries very quickly to ensure efficient temperature control, reducing the chilling effect. Cocona fabric is made using natural technology and contains activated carbon from discarded coconut shells. Cocona will not wear off or wash out as it is contained inside the fibres. It is extremely breathable and accelerates evaporation by increasing the surface area by 800%. The activated carbon element absorbs odour molecules which are then released and the carbon refreshed by the warmth from washing and drying. As well as all that it provides a natural UVA and UVB barrier and shields the skin from harmful UV radiation. To really help you remain pong free Lowe Alpine have also added Microban to the garment which inhibits bacterial growth to keep the Dryflow 120 Pants smelling fresh. Microban is built in during the manufacturing process providing odour control for the lifetime of the garment
Rab have upgraded all their brilliant sleeping bags for the 2014 season with Hydrophobic Down. This flurocarbon free treatment was developed in conjunction with Nikwax and although Hydrophobic Down is not waterproof it dries much faster, absorbs less water and retains loft far better than untreated down. The Rab Neutrino 200 is a stupendously light bag and is hand filled in Derbyshire with 200g of 800 fill power Hydrophobic White Goose Down for maximum loft and insulation. The Tapered Mummy shape is optimised for bags with fill weights between 100 and 600g and has been designed purely for performance with a close fitting and tapered shape with little slack in the inner. The shape of the Trapezoidal internal baffle chamber delivers a very stable structure that results in a consistent distribution of down throughout the bag and the minimal differential cut combine to give a close technical fit. Differential cut is a technology developed by Rab to ensure that the space between the lining and the outer fabric is optimised for the specific filling and fill power. This maximises the potential of the down to loft naturally resulting in greater performance. Both the inner and outer fabrics are Pertex Quantum, a superlight fabric that allows the down to reach its maximum loft and moulds to your body shape filling up any dead spaces internally. Access is via a 1/2 YKK zip with an anti-snag baffle. An internal shoulder baffle helps to maximise warmth provides. Both the hood and the shoulder baffle have drawcords. Temperature ratings are used to indicate a bags performance but are subjective and can be hugely affected by many factors such as your health and metabolism, how much you have had to eat or drink, how active you have been, humidity and altitude, the type of shelter used and whether you are using a suitable insulating mat. Your sleeping bag is only as good as the mat that’s beneath it, we recommend EXPED mats for comfort and insulation. The Comfort rating indicates the range at which a woman gets a full night’s sleep, the Limit of Comfort rating indicates the range at which a man gets a full night’s sleep and the Extreme rating indicates a range at which a woman is protected from hypothermia. The Extreme rating is basically a survival rating and it is not advisable to rely on this for general use. The Ascender pant is a burly mountaineering soft shell pant that can shrug off the worst of the weather and has functional design elements to ensure comfort and reliability when you are out in all weathers. They are made with a mix of heavy weight and mid weight DWS (Double Weave Stretch) softshell fabric which uses tightly woven Nylon and Polyester fibres to repel wind and rain whilst maintaining superb breathability. Larger fibres on the inside of the pants actively wick moisture away from your skin to the smaller, tightly woven fibres on the outside where it evaporates. These external densely woven fibres reduce wind and water penetration making these versatile pants remarkably weather resistant and very quick drying. The Spandex content gives the Vector Pants some stretch to allow for unrestricted movement and comfort. High wear areas on the knees and seat are protected by heavier weight DWS, whilst the rest of the Ascender Pant uses mid weight DWS. Reinforced instep kick patches help to reduce crampon and boot damage further enhancing the Ascenders winter mountaineering pedigree. A really nice feature is the Tricot (brushed) lining to the waistband that feels great against the skin and helps to wick moisture. Plenty of zipped pockets finish off these versatile and hard wearing mountain pants.

Made using 3 Layer Gore-Tex Pro 40D in the main body and hood, then the super burly 3 Layer Gore-Tex Pro 80D in the high wear areas such as shoulders, arms and hips. The face fabric is made up of twisted Nylon yarns maintaining its tough, durable properties but allows the fabric to be more supple and not so stiff. The guys at M.E. have used all of their Storm Construction techniques during the design and build of the jacket. Everything form seam construction, placements and taping; which face fabrics to use, bar tack reinforcement and storm guarded YKK Aquaguard zips. Fort Knox Federal Gold Reserve has nothing on this jacket when it comes to keeping things out. It is built around Mountain Equipment’s “Mountain Fit” block so it has that little bit of extra room to allow for other layers. The sleeves are pre-shaped and articulated to allow for more natural unrestricted movement. The Mountain HC Hood works with for short periods and great without a helmet so it’s a win win. If you need a snow skirt the awesome it has one of those too, but if you don’t need one the cool thing is you can just unzip it and take it out. The Dual Tether Hem Drawcord allows for greater fit customisation whilst also eliminating the risk of snagging things like ice axes and crampons. M.E have engineered all the pockets on the front of the jacket in accordance with their Stratum Storage System Construction which increases the internal pocket size by as much as 25%; so there is stacks of room for maps, gloves, hats and whatever else you like to store in your pockets. 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro 40D fabric 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro 80D fabric reinforcements Mountain HC Hood is fully adjustable Mountain fit with articulated and pre-shaped sleeves Storm Construction techniques used throughout 2-way YKK moulded AquaGuard centre front zip Stratum Storage; 4 large pockets with YKK moulded Aquaguard zips and inner bonded edge guard 2-way YKK WR underarm pit zips with laminated and bonded entry Zip-out internal snow skirt Adjustable laminated cuffs and dual tether hem drawcords For all you kit geeks out there, the links below will take you to Mountain Equipments Information pages where they will explain this jackets different fabrics, fills and constructions techniques in greater detail.
