With its dense, complex structure & âwild' flavours, Rosso de Montepulciano is great fun to pair with foods. Obviously Tuscan regional dishes go hand in hand with the area's own wines, such as pork loins roasted with garlic & rosemary, peppery veal chops & âdiavola' grilled chicken, but it would also work well with a good roast lamb. Cantine Innocenti lies between Montepulciano & Montefollonico & is run by Vittorio Innocenti & his family. The estate has around 12 hectares of vineyards between 330 & 350 metres above sea level. The cellar buildings, dating back to end of the 13th century, are in the small, well-preserved medieval town of Montefollonico. Bright ruby red in the glass, with an abundant nose of stewed plums, saddle leather & wild rose. In the mouth it is full & complex, with plenty of hot fruit coming through & mingling with flavours of spice, old oak & sun-baked undergrowth. There is a pleasing herby component on the finish, which is long & nicely balanced.
