With its bright fruit, darker savoury notes & firm acidity, this is a wine that loves the dinner table. As is typical with southern Rhone reds, meat is its perfect foil, from roasts to Saturday night steaks. It will also work well with more adventurous fare, from roast quail, garlicky snails & liver & bacon. It's great with soft blue cheese as well. Clos Saint-Michel is situated in the village of Sorgues near Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine has 15 hectares of vineyards, but only three of these within the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate has been owned & run by the Mousset family for over 60 years & winemaking is now in the fourth generation of this family. Bright ruby in colour with an inviting nose of sun-ripened plum & strawberry aromas, hints of orange peel & liquorice, black olive & dried bay leaf. In the mouth it is flavourful & complex, with well-integrated sweet jammy fruit & Asian spice nuances, all balanced by good acidity. The finish is long, clean & supple.
