In 1946, Grace Golden was commissioned to produce a series of poster images entitled Life in Britain Today. The intention was to illustrate how the country had recovered from the War (which it hadnt) and to encourage visitors from overseas to come and see for themselves! Arrivals and Departures is intended to represent a typical railway terminus, rather than any particular station and the detail in her image is quite wonderful. The more we look, the more we see, including of course a good many servicemen returning from overseas and no doubt contemplating a somewhat uncertain future.
