The Readers Digest Magazine has a long association with the Royal Family, from its early writings on the young Princess Elizabeth in the 1930s to modern tributes to
the future king William. This book, reproduced from the magazine archives, features some of the best of those accounts. There are first-person recollections - such as a
Saskatchewan man's memories of the royal visit of George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Moose Jaw, Canada in 1939, profiles of family members and even Prince Charles in
his own words.
These are royal writings from less frenetic decades, featuring memorable insights: Prince Charles, queueing for his 5s 6d dinner in his Cambridge university halls
beneath a portrait of his ancestor, Henry VIII; the late Queen Mother laying a foundation stone as if she has just descovered a new and delightful way of spending an
afternoon; the Queens travel tips, under the glorious title: Orf One Goes Again, and even intimate details of the household (from 1957). Sometimes, perhaps one evening
in 20, she and Philip can dine alone.
This facsimile book offers an intimate glimpse of the Royal household through the years, and charts events that readers can relive and enjoy again, written in the
inimitable Reader's Digest way.

Beginners Guide To Getting Published The writers who get their work published are not necessarily the most brilliant. They are writers who provide what editors and publishers want. Being a successful writer means balancing your individuality and enthusiasm with your writing and selling skills. It means: adopting a professional attitude from the start; writing as well as you can in your chosen field; giving editors what they want, not what you think they should want; presenting your work as editors like to see it; and, developing a mutually profitable relationship with a publisher. The world of publishing is volatile and highly competitive so you'll need a guide to show you how to give yourself the best chance of success. If you follow the advice in this book you'll save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration. Now in its 6th edition, this book has been thoroughly revised and updated to include: the absolute need to be computer-literate - the chances of success are limited these days for any writer without internet/e-mail access and the skills to use it; the advantages to the self-publisher offered byprint-on-demand technology; specific advice for beginners from established writers; updated information on how the world of publishing works, and how and why material is selected for publication; and, the importance of websites, blogging, pod-casting and other digital information.

I reckon there are about nine things a chap doesn't realise he should be able to do. Not stuff you can download from the internet at the touch of the button, but really important things. So, in this book, each is dealt with fully, and it's a good read rather than just boring facts. It's a series of chapters with some light gaggery, but also solid information and plenty of nice pictures and diagrams.
'For example, in 'How to land an airliner' there is good background stuff about the likelihood of it ever falling to you (extremely unlikely), some stats on past dramas, plus good information on the controls, what they do and what they look like.
'There's a range of subjects from the genuinely relevant = how to deliver twins, for example - to the absurd, such as how to play Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata', so there's ample opportunity for me to rant, enthrall you with technical explanations and entrance you with interesting facts.' - James May
