Originally released in 1969 in honour of the Monaco Grand Prix, the Heuer Monaco really gained traction in its popularity after featuring with Steve McQueen in a 1971 film called 'Le Mans'. Since this time the watch has become synonymous of McQueen and although discontinued in the 70s, it was reissued with a new design in 1998. The Monaco typically features a pair of pushbuttons at the 2 and 4 o’clock position, hour and minute dials at 3 and 9 o'clock respectively as well as a leather strap.
In 1963, Jack Heuer was attending the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race at which the legendary Rodriguez brothers, Ricardo and Pedro, were driving for Ferrari. Here, he became enthralled about the La Carrera Pan-Americana race and the evocative name 'Carrera'. Thus, the name for the greatest driving watch was born. The grand Carrera is a variation of this original model with slight changes such as the double crown and the double sapphire case back. In addition to this, the sub-dials of old were replaced in this watch with a polished metal semi-circle housing a dial.
