Deathbowl to Downtown DVD. Along with San Francisco & Barcelona, New York is arguably the modern street skating city, both in reality & image. Because of the unique background, experience & perspective of the film's creators & the decision to "cast" the city of New York as one of the main characters, Deathbowl to Downtown is unprecedented, seminal film about the evolution of skateboarding. I was very excited/nervous when I put Deathbowl to Downtown into my DVD player. I had not watched the DVD & started distributing it on recommendation from Chris Pastras from Stereo & Steve R from Five Boro both had been involved with the film & both thought it was excellent. They were both spot on this is amazing documentary that really captures what skateboarding is about. On one level Deathbowl to Downtown is about street skating, but it's also an overview of skateboarding's shift from the parks & pools of the 1970's, to ramp skating in the 80's, to the street ascendancy of the 1990's & beyond. I was seriously stoked on this DVD it's worth the money for the Gonz footage from the mid 80's, which is just mind blowing! There is footage of the Gonz doing frontside 50/50 on a handrail for the first time ever! I reckon if you watched this with a girl on first date you would defo hook up, because it makes skateboarding seem like the coolest thing ever! Especially how it ties skateboarding with graffiti, lifestyle & changes in urban development.
