The New Anchor Book of Crewelwork Embroidery Stitches: Techniques and Designs Crewelwork is one of the oldest embroidery techniques; associated with the 17th century and often known as Jacobean embroidery, it is as popular today as it has ever been. Historically worked in soft wools on twilled linens, todays embroiderer is discovering just how successfully the techniques can be applied to stranded cotton threads and a wider variety of fabrics. Crewelwork embroidery is distinguished by its textured, almost three-dimensional stitches. This book outlines in step-by-step detail the working of 48 of the most versatile stitches, listed alphabetically for easy reference. Sixteen new embroidery designs show the stitches worked in context and trace-off patterns are included. The featured embroideries include traditional Jacobean motifs, contemporary flowers, and whimsical celebration designs. There are also ideas for using the embroidered designs on several small projects.
The Bayeux Tapestry Embroiderers StoryA fascinating and colourful account of this historic tapestry.Who were the embroiderers of the Bayeux Tapestry? What were their tools, their materials, and how could such a massive project have been designed and organised? These questions and many others have been avoided for so long due to a lack of hard facts, but in this book the author has drawn upon her own experience as an embroiderer and artist to piece together all the clues she could find in the tapestry itself. After extensive research, Jan Messent has compiled a fascinating and colourful account which will help to place this famous embroidery in a plausible context. This new study is essential reading for anyone wishing to know more about The Bayeux Tapestry Embroiderers.About the AuthorJan Messent qualified as a teacher in the mid-50s and, after teaching Art, History and English, became deeply involved with embroidery as an art form. As a member of the Embroiderers Guild, she taught embroidery design to its members, wrote and illustrated design books, and lectured worldwide. Her last embroidery book was about the Bayeux Tapestry. She became interested in the experimental use of knitting and crochet and hoped, by her books on the subject, to open up new dimensions in the creative use of yarn. Now, having retired from lecturing, Jan writes historical fiction full-time, embroidering as a side-line, reading, painting, and listening to good music.

Specializing in various forms of embroidery, she is currently busy with a Master Craftsman Course in canvas work through the American Embroiderers Guild. Via runs her own business hand-dyeing embroidery thread under the label Chameleon Threads, distributing to shops all over South Africa as well as Australia, New Zealand, Norway, France and the UK. Review Space-dyed threads are very tempting - but using them effectively can be a challenge. Unlike variegated threads, which are machine dyed and have definite blocks of colour, space-dyed threads (machine or hand-dyed) are more subtle as the colours bleed into each other - and where they meet, a new colour is formed. The projects in this book really make use of the properties of space-dyed threads. On canvaswork, a single stitch such as cushion stitch is used to great effect, and the nuances of colour found in a single skein work beautifully in blackwork. Hardanger, Casalguidi, crewelwork, stumpwork and ribbon embroidery all benefit from the gentle hues, and the spectacle case and evening bag by Gay Booysen are quite delightful. This gorgeous book will encourage you to sue some of those mouth-watering threads youve been hoarding...or even give you an excuse to buy some more! --Stitch

Celtic, Viking and Anglo-Saxon Embroidery: The Art of Jan MessentCeltic, Viking and Anglo-Saxon Embroidery: The Art of Jan Messent. This book combines everything held dear to the authors heart in a single volume - embroidery, writing, artwork, history and books. About the authorJan Messent qualified as a teacher in the mid-50s and, after teaching Art, History and English, became deeply involved with embroidery as an art form. As a member of the Embroiderers Guild, she taught embroidery design to its members, wrote and illustrated design books, and lectured worldwide. She became interested in the experimental use of knitting and crochet and hoped, by her books on the subject, to open up new dimensions in the creative use of yarn. Now, having retired from lecturing, Jan writes historical fiction full-time, embroidering as a side-line, reading, painting, and listening to good music. j

The instructions for the stitches are well depicted and should be of interest to those of us who wish to experiement with stitches that are not available in many other stitch guides. An inexpensive book to add to ones collection.Waterstones Newsletter: The first half of this book includes a very practical stitch guide with clear step-by-step photos for each stitch, as well as tips on fabric painting techniques (etc). The second half of the book is project-based, with full-colour pictures, line drawings to trace, and full instructions. If you want to learn how to add texture to your embroidery, this book is a great starting point. Its a shame the cover is not shown here, as it really does give a good idea of what to expect from the contents. My main thoughts on this book are really only minor quibbles. I thought that although the stitch reference guide was very practical, it perhaps showed fewer stitches in greater detail than strictly necessary, at the expense of instead including a wider variety of stitches to choose from. Also, although the projects in the latter half are attractive, they didnt really excite me greatly (obviously, this is purely a matter of personal taste). Having said that, there are various elements of the projects that did appeal to me, and I can imagine adapting them within my own work. I also thought the instructions were very comprehensive and well-written, so perfect for anyone who DID want to follow the projects exactly as presented. The stitches and projects in this book are intended for free embroidery, but I think actually most aspects could be successfully adapted for counted thread embroidery, so creative counted embroiderers should not dismiss this book as irrelevant. At first glance, I didnt think this book quite lived up to my hopes for it, but after consideration, the way it is presented does actually offer a lot of versatility, and I think I will be able to use the contents in a very practical way, especially as departure points for linked ideas.Although I would have preferred greater quantity in terms of stitch reference, this is still a lovely book to add to my collection, and sits well alongside Gilda Barons The Art of Embroidered Flowers. Product Description Silk ribbon embroidery, with its varied textures and sculpted effects, is a magical medium for stitching floral designs. Whether its a field of lavender or a single gardenia, these embroidered images can be as fresh, colorful, and eye-catching as Mother Natures originals. Some even take the form of lifelike three-dimensional flowers. Readers who love to sew, whatever their skill level, will find instructions on the techniques and materials of this rewarding art, along with a varied assortment of projects-all inspired by actual color photographs and delicate watercolors, which appear along with the detailed stitch patterns. The projects include 12 different floral panels ready for framing, depicting flowers from daffodils and daisies to grape hyacinths and roses.Review Ribbon embroidery is not as hard as it sounds, and great fun to do. Because the ribbon is thicker than thread it grows surprisingly quickly, which is great for a beginner. Here are twelve different garden flowers used as inspiration for some beautiful pictures and other projects, based around photographs and paintings. Australian books always seem to be beautiful, lavishly illustrated with glorious images and this one is no exception. The author s photographs were turned into paintings by her daughter, and these in turn are shown as line drawings and then the final stitched pieces. Some of the line drawings are for developing yourself, but most are a whole project and these are made up into pictures. For those used to Search Press custom of staged photographs for learning new techniques, the line drawings are not quite as easy to understand, and there are not quite enough of them, particularly with the large number of written instructions and explanations. I got quite muddled at times, and wished for some photographs to put me right. A total beginner might easily get lost in here, so if you have never attempted this type of embroidery before, one of the Search Press titles for beginners would be a better buy. But if you have gone beyond that, and want to adorn your walls (or some plain boxes) with beautiful floral studies then this is the book for you. - Rachel Hyde, MyShelf.com you. --Rachel Hyde, MyShelf.com

ThreadworkThis is a book about creating sumptuous embellished surfaces made by: collaging rich colourful silks, transparent organza, stitching with embroidery threads and ribbons, knitting and other yarns. Also, adding further texture with raised embroidery, chords, metallic threads and beads.ReviewThis book contains a collection of very bright, colourful pieces of work, where embroidery and stitching is the star! In her introduction, Effie talks about her love of silk, three-dimensional texture, strange colourways and wrapped cords, all of which feature heavily here. Her method of work is to collage and layer silks, organzas and ribbons as a base fabric, then use embroidery stitches and other textures to create eye-catching pieces. The book is divided into sections which work through these processes. Each project focuses on a particular colourway, and you get a good variety of tone and texture through this. Nothing is repetitive here. There are diagrams and photographs throughout, and the former give very precise patterns to follow for stitching and layout, which is very helpful. By Section 4 you are getting into the serious use of stitching for embellishment and it is mostly hand stitches which give a very bold look to Effies pieces. They are rich, vibrant, and very in-your-face. The section on cords is very informative, and gives good instructions on how to make wrapped cords and embellish pieces in wavy, overlapping lines, which look very effective. This book is not for the faint-hearted; its colour choices, bold and vibrant, are everywhere in the book, as are the heavy stitches, beading and cording. But if you are a fan of bold and beautiful, you will have no end of inspiration here. The sheer number of projects makes it excellent value for its price, and if you are wanting to add some zing into your work and didnt know where to start, you need look no further.-Workshop On The Web You cant fail to be inspired by this wonderfully colourful book. The 28 projects are all clearly explained and illustrated with an abundance of sketches and colour photographs. The projects are organised into four sections: backgrounds; stitches for texture and effect; cords for embellishing and trimming; and stitch and bead patterns - and each section is more luscious than the last. The wrapped and embellished cords, sometimes enriched with knots and beads, are absolutely gorgeous; they can be used singly, twisted or plaited together, couched onto fabric to create pattern or texture, become an integral part of an embellished surface, or provide the perfect finishing touch to a project. Using richly coloured silk fabrics and brightly coloured threads (Effie gives a list of zinger DMC colours she likes to use), every embroidery in the book is a mouth-watering confection. In fact, I think the whole book is a zinger!-Stitch

This book includes an extensive stitch guide, covering all the stitches necessary for crewel embroidery, a design section, and a history of the Royal School itself. Although it is commonly thought of as a woven tapestry, the Bayeux Tapestry is in fact the oldest surviving example of crewelwork. The illustrations on the piece tell the story of the events leading up to the Norman Conquest, and are embroidered on to the linen surface with a two-ply worsted wool.About the AuthorBecky Hogg achieved a first class honours degree in Textiles at Loughborough School of Art, then specialised in traditional hand embroidery as a Graduate Apprentice at the Royal School of Needlework, where she learned blackwork, goldwork, silk shading and whitework.
