The Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut), is a broadly columnar, spreading & deciduous tree with an upright & bushy habit. The flowers of both sexes are borne in 1020 cm long, upright catkins, the male flowers in the upper part & female flowers in the lower part. They appear in late June to July, & by autumn, the female flowers develop into spiny cupules containing 37 brownish, edible, nuts that are shed during October.
