1973 formula One Italian
Grand Prix. Ronnie
Peterson made his debut
with the March team in
1970 and, in only his
second season, he gained
five second places and
was runner-up to 1971
world champion Jackie
Stewart. It was not until
1973, when he joined
Lotus, that he gained
his first victory at the
French Grand Prix,
followed by victories at
the Austrian, Italian
and US Grand Prix,
achieving third place in
the world championship.
After another spell with
March, and then Tyrell,
he rejoined Lotus in
1978, but suffered fatal
injuries after a crash at
the start of the Italian
Grand Prix, robbing
motor racing of one of
its fastest and most

mutual respect shared by

Imola on 1st May 1994,
when Ayrton Senna sent a
message over his car
radio “Greetings to my
good friend Alain
Prost” who was
commentating on the race
for the French television
service. As a mark of
this respect, four times
F1 World Champion, Alain

The field gets away in
the 1948 RAC Grand Prix
on October 2nd 1948, the
first ever event on the
disused wartime airfield
at Silverstone. Winner of
the race was Luigi
Villoresi in the works
4CLT Maserati number 18,
who started at the back
of the grid with his
team-mate Alberto Ascari,
who finished second, as
their cars had arrived
too late to practice.
Michael Turner was a
young spectator at the
race, and has painted
the scene for the BRDC to
commemorate the fiftieth
anniversary of the
circuit. His atmospheric
painting provides a
lasting reminder of the
early beginnings of this
famous track and a
striking contrast with
today`s Grand Prix scene.
