Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist film in the science-fiction genre directed by Fritz Lang. Produced in Germany during a stable period of the Weimar Republic, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia & makes use of this context to explore a political theme of the day: the social crisis between workers & owners in capitalism.
The film is set in the massive, sprawling futuristic mega-city Metropolis, whose society is divided into two classes: one of planners & management, who live high above the Earth in luxurious skyscrapers & one of workers, who live & toil underground. The city was founded, built & run by the autocratic Joh Fredersen.
Futura, or the false Maria, is probably one of the most recognized icons in Science Fiction today. Futura, the perfect pawn gone wrong. She was supposed to sow discord among the workers of Metropolis disguised as Maria, a teacher of peace. Instead, she malfunctioned, becoming an instrument of death & destruction. She brought about an incredible crisis, the likes of which the inhabitants of Metropolis, both above & below ground had ever known!
