Autocult 1:43 Benz 35-40 Resin Model Car ATC01001 In the first half of 1900 the model 35/40 was the top-of-the-range model of the company Benz. With an engine displacement of exact 3, 380 cc, the four cylinder engine developed between 35 & 40 hp at a speed of only 1, 350 rpm. With a leather-lined cone clutch, a four-speed gearbox & chain drive (or optionally by cardan) the power was transmitted to the rear axle. With a top-speed of almost 90 km/h the large Benz classed among the fastest vehicles on public roads at that time. Beside the top speed, for this type of vehicle the greatest level of luxury was also essential. The Benz 35/40 fulfilled this requirement; back then the sales brochure promoted a “smooth suspension of the car”. One, who took a liking to motorized vehicles in the German Empire quite early, was Albert Wilhem Heinrich of Prussia; the brother of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. His enthusiasm for technical things was such that he already gained an honorary doctors degree in form of the academic title “ Doctor of Engineering honoris causa” from the technical university Charlottenburg at the age of only 37 years. Six years later he attracted attention with his patent application for a h&-operated windshield wiper. Due to the good financial background of his princely house it was a simple thing for Heinrich of Prussia to fulfill his automotive desires & therefore he also ranked among the customers of Benz. With his Benz 35/40 double phaeton he participated in the 1, 700 kilometers long-distance race “ Herkomer-Konkurrenz” on 6-12 of June 1906. ...
