- ‘ Bartons’ were for many years of the 20th century Britain’s largest independent bus operators. The business pioneered both British & Continental Coach Holidays with its popular ‘ Road Cruises’ & the Company also ran an extensive ‘ Express Service’ network of coaches throughout Britain. The business was founded in 1908 near Nottingham by one of the great innovators & characters of the passenger transport industry, Thomas Henry Barton O.B.E., & his family. There were long associations with certain chassis manufacturers, most notably Daimler, followed by Lancia & then Leyl&. But Barton’s remain famous for their reputation for the superb re-engineering of a very wide range of vehicles (including re-bodying) to suit their own individual requirements.
