Named after the distinctive Split Apple Rock in nearby Abel Tasman National Park, this wine is from Austrian born Hermann Seifried who built his pioneering winery in 1973. All the fruit for Split Rock was selected from Hermanns own vineyards (one planted in the 1970s, the other in the late 1990s) in Nelson, a region well protected from the vagaries of the weather by mountains to the east, west & south. Its pure Riesling, a grape that has once more become popular largely thanks to the exceptional wines being produced by New Zealand & Australia. The wine is slightly off-dry yet with more than enough bracing, natural freshness to make it perfectly balanced. Terrific with lighter Far East Asian cuisine, & fresh shellfish.
