The Diffonty family can trace their winegrowing history back to 1673. They owned just two hectares of vines in Chteauneuf at the start of the 20th century but steadily built up their holdings, & in 1958 launched the Cuvee du Vatican label with the blessing of the Pope. Today Jean-Marc Diffonty, president of the Young Winemakers of Chteauneuf du Pape, is at the helm, although his legendary grandfather Marius was still active in the cellar well into his 80s. Their vineyards are textbook examples of the appellation, strewn with hefty stones known as galets or pudding stones. These are key to the wines extraordinary ripeness & concentration. For maximum enjoyment, decant & serve with roast red meats & herby Provençal casseroles.
