For many years Neil Pike was winemaker at Mitchelton but he is now at the head of his own family estate in the Clare Valley. Pikes has rapidly become one of the areas most acclaimed producers, & was recently awarded 5 Stars by revered Australian wine writer James Halliday. Thanks to its natural high acidity, Riesling grows happily in warm regions like the Barossa & retains great freshness. However, its Australias cooler areas that really produce the finest wines. As Anthony Rose of the Independent notes, the Clare Valley "is the hub of the Riesling revival in Australia". This refreshing example makes a lovely aperitif. Top food partners would be simple grilled white fish, seared scallops with lime & chilli, or Thai crab cakes.
