The hamlet of Bages lies on the road to Pauillac, close to the grand properties of Pichon Longueville Baron, Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, & Chteau Latour. Further along the road, nearly at the top of the hill, is Chteau Haut-Bages Liberal, a small chteau
- more of a comfortable manor house really
- but an excellent spot for vine growing, with 28 hectares of deep Garonne gravel. It takes its name partly from the hill named Haut Bages, & partly from the name of the family who built up the property during the 18th century. Robert Parker awards this wine 92 points & comments: " Probably the finest Haut-Bages Liberal since the 1982". Serve with simple roast red meats when younger & with game & sauced meats as it matures.
