Peru’s spectacular Inti Raymi, means Festival of the Sun & dates back to the Inca times to guarantee fine harvests. The annual celebrations take place in the ruins of the Sacsayhuaman fortress overlooking Cuzco. &13; &13; The highlight is June 24 when the Sapa Inca calls for the sun’s blessings in front of the Santo Domingo church. He is then carried on a golden throne through flower bedecked streets to the fortress, attended by high priests, court officials & noblemen, dressed in all their finery, to the accompaniment of music, prayers & dancing. Speeches & rituals follow &, at sunset, straw bales are set alight for the crowds to dance around, before the procession returns for the final blessing in the square. You will see everything in the main tour, although the itinerary will be amended slightly to incorporate the festival.
