The E-4B is a military version of the Boeing 747 200. It serves with the USAF as an Airborne Command Post in crisis areas. Operating as a National Airborne Operations Centre the E-4B ensures continuous Command & Control for the U.S. Government in times of war or major natural disasters, should l&-based communications systems fail. In this role the aircraft provides a modern, well equipped comm&, control & communications centre with excellent survival characteristics. The main deck is divided into six operating areas. It can accommodate up to 114 personnel. The E-4B is fitted with defensive equipment to counter electro-magnetic pulse, which is emitted during nuclear explosions. The aircraft's time on task can be extended up to three days with the use of air-to-air refuelling. Of the four aircraft of this type, one is constantly in a the combat ready state.
