Ginger has been in medicinal use in China for a wide variety of conditions, including rheumatism, with records dating from the fourth century BC. Turmeric is a member of the Ginger family, & is extensively farmed in India, China & various tropical countries.  Turmeric is used in both Chinese & Indian herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory.  The large Boswellia tree is tapped to collect its resin & has long been used in traditional Indian herbal medicine.

Ginger, Turmeric & Boswellia are plants that would typically be used in the Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine for pain & inflammation due to injury, wear & tear & sprains & strains.  These herbs combine anti-inflammatory & warming effects.  The warming effect improves circulation (as poor blood supply can worsen pain & discomfort), this ensures the efficient delivery of nutrients for the healing process.

Properties 
Ginger—in one trial, 1300mg of ginger root powder was shown to be equivalent to the standard dose of an anti-
inflammatory drug called phenylbutazone.  The most potent inhibitors of the inflammatory prostaglandins &
leukotrienes found in ginger are the pungent constituents collectively known as ‘gingerols’.  Ginger possesses
blood-thinning effects & also widens the blood vessels increasing blood flow, making it a potent circulatory
aid.
Turmeric—the active ingredient is curcumin, which is responsible for the spice’s yellow colour.  Curcumin is a
strong antioxidant, protecting joint lining against attack from free radicals.  It also lowers histamine levels &
increases the natural productions of cortisone to produce very powerful anti-inflammatory effects.  Turmeric
has proved valuable in both osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis.
Boswellia—the active ingredients are Boswellic acids, & they function in a very similar way to Non Steroidal
Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), preventing the release of powerful chemicals known as leukotrienes, which
lead to the inflammatory reaction.
 
Contra-indication/ Precautions 
Ginger is not suitable for those taking blood thinners.  Ginger should not be used in cases of blocked bile ducts & anyone with a history of gallstones should consult a doctor prior to use.  Turmeric may cause uterine contractions & so should be avoided during pregnancy.
