Properties :

Echinacea
- increases the production & activities of certain types of white blood cells, called lymphocytes & macrophages.  These cells remove impurities (including bacteria, viruses & yeast cells) from the body by engulfing them & breaking them down.  The components responsible for this are thought to be: Alkylamides/ Polyacetylenes, Caffeic acid derivatives & Polysaccharides.  Bacteria & viruses spread into the tissues by breaking down the “glue” between cells, allowing them to penetrate further.  Caffeic acid derivative are thought to protect the “glue”, called hyaluronic acid, from breakdown by bacteria & viruses & therefore slow the spread of infection.  An acute anti-inflammatory response is caused by Echinacea’s Alkylamides/ Polyacetylenes & polysaccharides.  They stimulate certain white blood cells to move  spontaneously to areas of infection & kill bacteria. Echinacea also increases interferon production, a substance produced by cells that restricts the growth of viruses. Garlic
- has antibacterial, antiviral & antioxidant properties.  The pungent sulphur compounds, allicin & alliin, are responsible for these & many other benefits, & must be present in order for garlic to offer its potential benefits.

Plantain
- contains chlorogenic acid & neochlorogenic acid & aucubin. The chlorogenic acid & neochlorogenic acid account for its local anti-inflammatory effects, whilst aucubin has shown antibiotic activity.  Plantain is also popular as an expectorant & contains mucilage to soothe irritated membranes. - have anti-catarrhal, antispasmodic & local anti-inflammatory actions. The flavonoids, including anthocyanins & quercetin, are believed to be responsible for some of these effects.  It is specifically used in chronic nasal catarrh, with deafness, & sinusitis.   Precautions
